Project POST: Promoting Optimism, Spreading Tolerance

Program Overview:
The purpose of Project POST is to fulfill the mission statement of Teens for Tolerance through the concept of "unity through
anonymity."  The project will be introduced throughout the week of April 11th – 15th, 2011, and twice more during my senior year if it
is successful. The essentials of the project are detailed below:

  • Stacks of brightly colored Post-It notes will be stationed throughout the school - in homerooms, house offices, library, etc.
  • Students will have the opportunity to write their own thoughts on these notes. The content may be anything from a compliment to
a classmate, a thank-you to the stranger who held the door for them, or simply an inspiring quotation to brighten someone's day.
However, NO specific names are to be used. This way, every comment might have meaning to everyone who sees it, not solely the
person it may have been intended for.
  • Notes will be placed in large envelopes, stationed around school in the same location as the Post-Its. I will pick up the notes from
each location and skim through them to ensure the content is appropriate for public viewing. The notes will also be approved by
    the project advisors.
  • A large bulletin board by the main entrance will be designated to the display of these notes, so anyone passing by might read
them. Since the notes are anonymous, they might be directed at anyone – the child in a wheelchair, the boy failing his hardest
class, anybody who needs to be cheered up. The words of kindness will have all the more meaning for their anonymity, and will
spread the concept of caring and acceptance throughout the school environment.

Rubber wristbands will also be sold in promotion of the project, with all funds being donated to the Pay it Forward Foundation (see
www.payitforwardfoundation.org). Hopefully, the positive energy the project creates will be able to endure even beyond the project
itself, and extend into the lives of every student and teacher here at Ludlowe. Thank you for your support
!
Program 2: One for All                                    Students: Rachel Finlaw & Ashley Crowe
Working with Athletic Director and the United Sports Program to develop activities for special needs kids and
involving students

Program Overview:
Ever since Mr. Pollard mentioned this idea of spreading “fair treatment, acceptance and support of all students” we have been
interested in making this a reality at Fairfield Ludlowe.  This program really speaks to us because we truly do wish for more tolerance
of people who might be a little different from everyone else - mentally or physically.  All kids are unique and we need to appreciate and
celebrate each other’s differences.  I have a little sister with Down Syndrome and it is extremely important to me that her peers will
be tolerant of her and treat her like they would treat anyone else.

We will create a group or club that brings together children with disabilities and those without disabilities.  We know how important it
is for kids with special needs to have friends they can hang with and be comfortable around.  We would plan different outings
together, such as going to the movies or going bowling, which would build lasting, loving and meaningful friendships.  Inside the club
we would have a buddy system and as a result, kids with special needs would now have friends they can say “hello” to or have a
conversation with that they weren’t able to have before.  Our dream would be for Ludlowe to become a leader in the community and
spread awareness that “
it’s not cool to ridicule.”  Our program would educate others on differences and provide a safe environment
for everyone.  We hope that people will be able to gain acceptance from all of their peers and make a lasting change in the Fairfield
Ludlowe community and beyond.  This club will be for anyone who wishes to make new friendships, is ready to learn tolerance, and
have compassion - not pity, for others.  Together, we can make a difference.

Program Overview - Developing Programs at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital
We are interested in Teens for Tolerance because we like the challenge that this scholarship poses.  In a school like Fairfield
Ludlowe, where students already get along very well with one another, it is a hard task to come up with an idea that will help
everyone be tolerant of others.  So we think this is a wonderful opportunity to test our creative and management abilities in order to
develop a program that will not only promote tolerance but also have an effect in the way students treat others who are different from
themselves.

My partner and I are looking to incorporate the Teens for Tolerance mission by creating an opportunity outside of school where
Ludlowe students and students that have disabilities can get to know one another and have fun.  In the process, we feel that the
students can become more comfortable being around people who are different from themselves and in turn, treat them with more
respect, acceptance and support.  In this way, we hope to promote and spread tolerance to the community.

A small group of FLHS students will go to Yale New Haven Hospital and work with ill children. We will bring our experience back to
FLHS and work to increase the number of FLHS students volunteering as the year progresses. Our ultimate goal is to promote
tolerance by creating an atmosphere where everyone is accepted.
