To The Parents/Guardian(s) of the Class of 2012,
On February 6, 2009, Craig Pollard, a two-time cancer survivor, came to FLHS and gave a powerful presentation to the class of 2012 about his multiple battles with cancer. Craig fought Hodgkin's lymphoma when he was just 15 years old. He won his second battle at age 19, after a bone marrow transplant at the City of Hope Medical Center. His journey inspired him to create a scholarship foundation, Cancer for College. This is a very successful foundation, funding educational programs for students who have battled or are battling cancer.
“Knowing that I would ultimately return to college after my bone marrow transplant gave me the strength to keep fighting. It gave me a reason to live.” - Craig Pollard
Teens for Tolerance is a new initiative aimed at promoting the fair treatment, acceptance and support of all students. Similar to Cancer for College, students engage in projects to improve the lives of other s and in return earn scholarship money for college. The class of 2012 students, (individually or in small groups), are invited to participate by developing a project or to make improvements in an existing project relating to tolerance awareness. This scholarship competition is only open to the class of 2012 at FLHS and the amount of money being offered is $20,000. This is an amazing opportunity for our class to make a difference in the community and to assist the winner(s) in funding college.
On Monday, February 1, 2010, we held and assembly to present and explain this scholarship opportunity to the entire sophomore class. Applications are now available in every House guidance office and are due back by February 24, 2010. We have enclosed a handout, which the students have also received, giving an overview of the program’s mission statement and criteria. Please also visit the website at www.teensfortolerance.com for more information.
